Modern Languages
Children at Boundary Oak School come into contact with languages early. EYFS Nursery children are introduced to French during weekly sessions, where they learn simple phrases and songs in fun interactive lessons.
EYFS Reception and years 1, 2, 3 and 4 follow the 'Jolie Ronde' course with its focus on spoken French. A wide range of vocabulary is introduced in a natural way that children understand and enjoy.
Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 use the excellent Galore Park ' So you really want to learn French' course to prepare for Common Entrance and beyond. The school has a multi-media approach to languages and pupils regularly have French in the ITC suite with access to language learning resources.
Preparatory pupils are rigorously prepared for Common Entrance and from Year 6 onwards are able to achieve different coloured badges to mark their progress in French speaking. The most highly prized badge is the gold badge that can be awarded in Year 8. All pupils from year 5 upwards are assessed regularly in the four language skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing.
We have strong links with a school in the Pyrenees and encourage pupils to write to their 'penpals'. A combined French and Art trip is planned to Paris in the Summer of 2011 for Year 7 and 8 pupils.
