Mathematics
At Boundary Oak School, we aim to develop positive attitudes to maths as soon as possible. Pre-prep and Preparatory work in collaboration to ensure each child’s smooth progression through the school in this subject.
Children are encouraged to observe, experience and record practical tasks in order to learn mathematical concepts at an appropriate level. In EYFS Reception children use water containers to practice measurements, whereas further up the school, pupils carried out a comprehensive food survey in order to fully understand pie charts. This was followed by a whole school coca cola tasting session, where the results were meticulously recorded and presented by the Year 7 pupils. From EYFS Reception to Year 5 this approach is supported by the excellent Abacus scheme. Abacus encourages individual learning by showing different methods of dealing with one concept and helping the pupil to recognise which method is suitable for them. Abacus also provides accelerated learning material for more able students. National Curriculum levels in Maths are recorded and progress is closely monitored throughout the school.
| Years 6 to 8 follow the ‘So You Really Want To Learn Maths’ Prep books which is a new scheme supported by the Independent Schools Examination Board. In Preparatory time is spent on building up examination techniques and skills, working towards Common Entrance Examinations. Links are made through the teaching of ICT and Science where the areas of handling data, investigations and practice in the use of the four number operations and algebraic formulae are also covered. |

The Maths Department also enthusiastically promotes the attitude that Maths is fun. We have a whole school Maths Day, involving problem solving and quizzes, trips to Maths Theatre days and vibrant wall displays using mathematical techniques.
