English

The English Department aims to help children throughout the school become confident and articulate English users working to their full potential when reading, writing, listening and speaking. The literacy skills of all the children at Boundary Oak School are carefully monitored and recorded at every stage of their development. All subject teachers can have instant access to information about every individual child’s progress through the National Curriculum levels from Reception to Year 8. This information helps the English Department in particular, but other departments also, to understand where a pupil is in literacy terms and what he or she needs to do to progress further. Children are assessed twice a year on their reading and spelling age.

The children here are presented with a range of genres of texts, are encouraged to develop an understanding of different styles of writing and to comprehend the thoughts and ideas that are being conveyed.

Pupils are brought up to participate in the process of writing : a plan; then a hand-written first draft; correcting and amending; finally producing a "publishable" version using their word-processing skills on the computer.

Good presentation is valued and all children are given practical help and advice on how to best present their work with accuracy.

Pupils are also encouraged to develop their speaking and listening skills both within class and also in regular drama productions.
